Parish: Morality 19 September 2024

A parish not instructing its parishioners in morality misses a big chance. Morality is not moralism. It is rather the opposite. Morality is wisdom which enables us to survive in a complex world.
I know that this is not a great definition.

Morality balances between the many moral obligations ruling our minds and hearts. Without wisdom I get lost in either worldly joys or moralism. The last means that I am a failure, not good enough.

What are moral values?

Moral values express what is important to me, my family, my parish, the world and God. Not all moral values are equally important. And ... there is no way that I can fulfill all the (moral) needs of myself, others and God. I am limited. I can not do everything. I am not God.

But ...

If I hold an important moral value, it is my duty to seek ways to hold that value. If not, it is not a value. It is something unimportant or I will begin to feel guilty.

If I have a dream which is a value for me, it is my moral duty to seek ways to bring my dream to life.

Parish

If my parish is a value to me, than I have the duty to care for it. No excuses.

Jesus, I pray for instruction on healthy moral decision making.
