Many years ago a classmate, named Frankie approached me and made a proposal. "William, I'd like you to be my friend. But for the first year I will make all the choices how we will play. The second year, you can make all choices."
I declined politely.
I do praise Frankie for his honesty. He explained his intention. And after a year the roles would have been swapped.
Now, many years later and a little wiser, I could have given it a try. At any time I could have ended the friendship. It is hard to just do the will of someone else.

Abuse

How many parishioners will be invited like, "You may serve us. But you need to do everything according to our will."
How many of us get friendship invitations with an "As long as things are done according to our will"?

What is wrong?

The rejection following a disagreement. The inability to discuss honestly and openly the options we have.

Prayer

Jesus, guide us into community, little by little.
