Num 18:6 Of the Israelites, I myself have chosen your brothers the Levites as a gift to you.

God's Choice

God choose the levites as a gift to Aaron, the Jewish High Priest. They were perhaps a 10% of the Jewish population. They received the tithes of the Jewish population, but they did not posses land. The Levites had duties around the Tent of Meeting, the Tabernacle.

Service to Priests

Perhaps a modern Catholic Parish also would need 10% of the Catholics as staff to serve the community. They could live from tithes. There are so many needs among the believers that need care and support.

The tabernacle was to be transported by levites.
