Instruction 17 Nov 2018
God spoke at the creation. Next time we find God speaking, he gave a command. It is a great example of giving an instruction.
Genesis 2:8-9, 15-17
8 Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden which is in the east, and there he put
9 the man he had fashioned.
Yahweh God caused to spring up from the soil every
kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, with the tree of life and the tree
10 of the knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the garden.
Yahweh God took the man and settled him
16 in the garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it.
Then Yahweh God gave
the man this admonition,
You may eat indeed of all the trees in the garden.
17 Nevertheless of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you are not to eat,
for on the day you eat of it you shall most surely die.
Introduction
An instruction should have a contexts. The story in Genesis explains that God created various things for a purpose.
God had a plan. And man
became part of God's plan.
In verse 16 God instructs man.
Instructions may hold do's and don'ts
Instruction should clarify what the plan is and it may hold some specific parts:
- Explanation of the purpose.
- Things that need to be done or things that may be done where we have a freedom.
- Things that should not be done. Sometimes with and explanation why.
What strikes me in God's instruction is the warning with clarification:
Do not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, for you will die.
Observation
The poor man may not have understood what dead was. And ... man had to explain the warning to his wife who had not yet been created. Perhaps he forgot!
