Matthew 9:14-17. John's Disciples 10 Mar 2023

Mat 9:14 Then John's disciples came to him and said,
'Why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?'
15 Jesus replied,
'Surely the bridegroom's attendants cannot mourn
as long as the bridegroom is still with them?
But the time will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast.
16 No one puts a piece of unshrunken cloth onto an old cloak,
because the patch pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse.
17 Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins;
otherwise, the skins burst, the wine runs out,
and the skins are lost.
No; they put new wine in fresh skins and both are preserved.'

Now, John had disciples and Jesus had disciples. John had recommended some disciples to Jesus. What happened with the others?
Perhaps they trusted fasting more than Jesus. They did not fit in a new life with Jesus.
The conclusion is not that there is no place for fasting. It is a problem when I am stuck in 'the good old times', while not being able to renew my life.

Prayer

Jesus, please show me where my trust in 'methods' is bigger than my rust in you.

Where do I cling to the old? Perhaps in continuing to work for money.
