Matthew 6:16-18. Fasting, When? 29 Jan 2023

Mat 6:16 When you are fasting, do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they go about looking unsightly to let people know they are fasting. In truth I tell you, they have had their reward. 17 But when you fast, put scent on your head and wash your face, 18 so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees all that is done in secret; and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

When and Reward

There are two repeated words: 'When and Rewards.' Would I fast for a reward? Is it a way to manipulate God? In my opinion that would be somewhat cheap.
I do observe similarities in the way Jesus speaks about alms-giving, prayer and fasting.

Alms-giving, Fasting and Prayer

1. It seems to me that those three are considered normal practices.
2. They should be practiced in 'secret.'
3. There are rewards promised.

In the Jewish practice, purification may be connected.

Prayer

Jesus, guide me in the practice of Alms-giving, Fasting and Prayer.

Self Evaluation

When I hear the 'when' connected to fasting, I feel guilty.
I would feel more convenient when alms-giving and fasting would help me with connecting in prayer to God. But with the 'when', I feel encouraged just to try and practice.
