Matthew 5:33. Promises. 12 Jan 2023

Mat 5:33 Again, you have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but must fulfill your oaths to the Lord.

My ancestors have been told, that I must fulfill my oaths to the Lord. Of course this is a great example of reading some scripture out of the context. Perhaps even a wrong interpretation of a translation. Why would God have to tell my ancestor about how I should behave? That is exactly what Jesus will clarify in the next upcoming verses.

A promise is not yet an oath. I do know however that broken promises (which I have made) may leave a trace of guilt for years. Promises made either to God or to men are a big responsibility. I believe that we should be faithful in dealing with our promises. But we should not act childish - as if my parent gave me the obligation. I do not have to satisfy my parent or even God. I do not promote irresponsibility. But when I broke a promise, I can seek reconciliation with God, others and myself. True sons and daughters are members of a loving family. Not from families that hold grudges, guilt and shame.

Prayer

Jesus, teach me reconciliation and help me to re-establish damaged relationships.

Self Evaluation

I am human. I can't always predict the future. Thus I live on a huge pile of unfulfilled promises. Solid ground for workers!
