Matthew 5:17. Abolish Law or Prophets 1 Jan 2023

Mat 5:17 Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them.

Let me make it clear, I am not an expert in law or prophets. Why would anyone think that Jesus wanted to abolish the law or prophets? Perhaps no-one thought such things. It appears to be just an introduction. And this will be confirmed in the next verses.

Law and prophets might be understood as the Jewish Scripture. Much of it is a covenant among God and the Jewish people. They have to follow rules and laws.
Would Jesus have no expectations towards the gentiles (including Christians)? He offers a "new" way. A way of love, spirit and heart. The sermon on the mount (Matt 5-7) is a beautiful and inspiring introduction.

Prayer

Jesus, please explain to me more on the values of Law and Prophets.
