PSALM 52 - Cursed 23 Dec 2019
1 Samuel 21+22 tells the story of a man who betrayed, to king Saul, a priest who had helped David. Saul commanded that the priest and all his sons, being 80 persons, should be killed. His Jewish soldiers all refused to execute the 80 priests. The betrayer however killed all the priests. In psalm 52, David curses the murderer (God will crush you).
Curses are not innocent. If they would be, blessings also would be meaningless. If I am cursed because of a sin I committed, or my parents have committed, then I need to seek reconciliation as good as I can. After that I can pray to God to break the curse.
As usual, I lack wisdom. I need to seek the wisdom of God about how to deal with (possible) curses.
Unfortunately it may happen easily that impatient parents curse their own children, without realizing what they do.
Names and nicknames of children may contain curses. They may affect the bearer of the name.
1 [For the choirmaster. Poem Of David.
When Doeg the Edomite went and warned Saul,
'David has gone to Abimelech's house']
Why take pride in being wicked,
you champion in villainy,
all day long 2 plotting crime?
Your tongue is razor-sharp,
you artist in perfidy.
3 You prefer evil to good,
lying to uprightness. Pause
4 You revel in destructive talk,
5 That is why God will crush you,
destroy you once and for all,
snatch you from your tent,
uproot you from the land of the living. Pause
6 The upright will be awestruck as they see it,
they will mock him,
7 'So much for someone who would not place his reliance in God,
but relied on his own great wealth,
and made himself strong by crime.' 8 But I, like a flourishing olive tree in the house of God,
put my trust in God's faithful love,
for ever and ever. 9 I shall praise you for ever for what you have done,
and shall trust in your name,
so full of goodness,
in the presence of your faithful.
