Mat 27:1 When morning came,
all the chief priests and the elders of the people
met in council to bring about the death of Jesus.
2 They had him bound and led him away
to hand him over to Pilate, the governor.

It may be assumed that the crowds had reduced during the night time. There is little account in Matthew on some 4-8 nightly hours. All the chief priests (a small amount?) and elders (a larger number?) had been brought together. For the unusual purpose to bring someone to death.
